Scholarship for American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Members

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is partnering with University of Arkansas Grantham to offer one of its members a full scholarship to the University. The scholarship recipient will also receive a laptop computer provided by Purchasing Power and AFGE.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must ...

  • Be AFGE dues-paying members in good standing.
  • Meet University of Arkansas Grantham’s minimum admissions requirements.
  • Meet any special program admissions requirements.
  • Members should complete an essay. The essay should be 1,000 words not to exceed 3 pages long, double-spaced format using Times New Roman 12-point font with one-inch margins on all four sides. The essay should address a description of your relationship with the union and the labor movement, how it has personally affected your life, and why you believe you are a good choice for a union scholarship.
    Spouses and children (of any age) should complete an essay using the format above on the topic, “How Has AFGE Affected Our Family and Why Unions are Important”.
  • Scholarship recipient must begin studies at University of Arkansas Grantham within six months of being awarded the scholarship.
  • The scholarship is only valid in the name of the original recipient. It cannot be transferred.

As a condition of accepting the scholarship, each applicant will be asked to grant permission to University of Arkansas Grantham to release information contained in the scholarship application to the news media in the event that he or she is awarded this scholarship. Additionally, the scholarship recipients must provide a biography and photo for use by University of Arkansas Grantham.

Continuing Eligibility Requirements

  • The scholarship recipient must maintain good academic standing.
  • The scholarship recipient must remain continuously enrolled as defined in the University of Arkansas Grantham Catalog.

Applicants will be notified of the Scholarship Committee’s decision via email approximately 30 days after the scholarship application deadline. Following receipt of the Scholarship Committee’s decision, the chosen recipient must respond to the Committee within 30 days indicating his or her intent to accept the scholarship. Should the chosen recipient fail to timely respond to the Committee, the scholarship will be awarded to the next highest qualifying applicant.

NOTE: The scholarship recipient must maintain good academic standing and remain continuously enrolled, as defined in the University of Arkansas Grantham Catalog, to maintain scholarship eligibility. The scholarship will cover the costs of courses, textbooks, software and fees required for the recipient’s chosen degree program. Courses outside of the degree program may be taken, but at the expense of the scholarship recipient.

The scholarship application process begins April 1, 2020 and ends September 1, 2020.
