Lenexa, Kan., December 3, 2019 — UA Grantham, an online university, announced today that its board member, Lieutenant General (Ret) Thomas Rhame, has been awarded the United States Army War College Outstanding Alumni Award. The award was presented at the Outstanding Alumni Ceremony and Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the college’s Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Penn.

"We enthusiastically congratulate Gen. Rhame on this prestigious honor," said Dr. Anthony R. Petroy, interim president, provost and chief academic officer of UA Grantham. “He is most deserving of this award for his unwavering service to and support of our country’s service members and their families.”

Inaugurated in 1996 by the Alumni Association, the Outstanding Alumni Program recognizes excellence in community service by USAWC graduates after their retirement from government service. Awarded without respect to active duty rank or positions held, the award is intended to celebrate the attitude of continuing service to communities or the nation.

Since his retirement in 1997 as the Director of the Defense Security Assistance Agency, Rhame has continued to serve -- as the AUSA Vice President for Finance and Administration for 16 years and on the Army War College Foundation Board of Trustees for ten years as Chairman of the Board and chair of the Finance and Audit Committee. He has lent his leadership to the Society of the 1st Infantry Division, “the Big Red One Association,” which he commanded during the Gulf War. He is working to upgrade the 1st Infantry Division monument in Washington, DC, to add the names of the fallen from Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Afghanistan campaigns.

“Gen. Rhame embodies the UA Grantham spirit with his rich military history, dedication to continue to serve those who serve, as well as his commitment to better the community,” said Dr. Petroy. “We are so honored to have Gen. Rhame as part of the UA Grantham leadership.”
