After going through a life-changing divorce, becoming a single mother of four, and transitioning out of the military, I found myself starting over from scratch, in my 30s. I felt uncertain and even a little ashamed about going back to school but I knew I had to do it, not just for myself, but for my children. With courage, confidence, and a deep sense of purpose, I pushed forward. Today, I'm proud and deeply honored to say: I did it. I earned my degree. This achievement represents more than just education its proof that no matter where life takes you, its never too late to rise again.

The staff really want you to succeed and will make sure that they reach out and get you back in the right headspace when you need it. I started my path to a BS in 2006. After a year at university, I decided to enlist in the USMC. I spent 5 years in the Marines as an infantryman, deploying to Afghanistan twice. When I left the Corps, I went back to school for two years before I was offered a job in electronics. After that, I switched roles to HSE and realized that I need a BS to not hit a glass ceiling in my career. I needed something that worked for working adults and quickly found UAG. The design of the courses makes it easy for me to navigate the studies while also working full time. Now I am working overseas, with my amazingly supportive wife and 8-month-old daughter. Without them, this degree would not have happened.

This journey was challenging for me to experience after a concussion, and I must say it helped build me back up mentally again. Having something to have to do everyday was good for me. I was worried about entering this class because it is a team-based class, meaning you have to work with different members of the class to get the assignments completed. There is a team assignment due in Week 2, and I haven't heard from my teammates yet after trying to reach out to them. Prof. Debra Krouse emailed me and reassured me that I wouldn't fail the course because of them, and made an announcement to everyone to contact their team members. Debra went above and beyond in this scenario because I needed the reassurance of not failing if my team members did not help.

In April of 2023 I received the news that I had melanoma cancer stage 3 that had spread to my lymph nodes. When I heard I had the C word I thought my life was over, I always wanted to go back to nursing school but never had the time. I pushed and 2 years later I am going to be the first one out of my family to graduate college.
