I was never able to finished college when I was younger because it was hard being a single mother and working full time without any help. After I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, I was determined to fight and to never give up. I have been cancer free for nearly six years now and always wanted to finish college. I was a mediocre student - at best - in high school. I have never really been a student who simply loves class. I love to learn but not in a structured environment. Some of the hurdles I encountered in this journey centered around my age as a learner. First, I had to orient to becoming a formal learner. It had been over 30 years since my previous experiences learning. The most difficult class for me was calculus. I continually sought ways to relate what was being taught to future applications of it with relationship to engineering practices. This helped me maintain interest and dig deeper into the intent of the course. Second, balancing the requirements of a college education with adult life responsibilities meant developing a habitual pattern involving time set aside to focus on school and time set aside to focus on family/life.
