Meet a UA Grantham Student Advisor

UA Grantham student advisor Lynn Berry has been working in higher education for nearly 16 years, connecting with students from diverse backgrounds who all have a common goal—being successful in their studies and completing their online degree program. But what Lynn says she appreciates most about her role is the chance to learn about her students, their “whys and why nots.” She believes supportive relationships are key to educational success, and as a student advisor, aims to build genuine friendships with students.

“Building rapport and trust to help them over any hurdles and to overcome obstacles,” Lynn said. “Building their confidence and belief in themselves, celebrating their successes with them, and making sure they feel supported—not like just a number.”

Lynn says the most rewarding part of her job is hearing from students after they’ve graduated—expressing their excitement and appreciation for the support they’ve received throughout their journey.

How UA Grantham’s Student Advisors Support Students

Once enrolled at University of Arkansas Grantham, students are assigned an advisor. As a student, you can expect to hear from your advisor by phone, email or text every couple of weeks. However, we encourage you to reach out to your advisor whenever you need it. One of the main keys to student success at UA Grantham is keeping the communication lines open—with your advisor, instructors, fellow students, and others you encounter throughout your studies.

Your student advisor will monitor and discuss with you your progress, in terms of grades, credit hours, and your involvement in the online classroom. For example, if you haven’t posted on a discussion board in a while, your advisor may reach out to talk through any hurdles or personal circumstances that could be affecting your ability to stay engaged in your coursework.

Questions Your Advisor Can Answer

The central goal of every UA Grantham student advisor is to assist students and guide them to the resources they need to succeed. During your check-ins, your advisor will listen to any problems you may be experiencing and offer solutions. Your advisor is your advocate—there to support you and celebrate your wins along the way.

If you find yourself struggling with time management, a student advisor can help you create a schedule that works for your busy lifestyle. If your grades aren’t where you want (or need) them to be, your advisor can provide study tips and guide you toward tutoring services and other resources offered by UA Grantham. They may not handle financial aid questions or technical support issues, but your advisor is always there to help you locate the help you need.

“We’re here to support students and help them achieve something,” Lynn said. “I enjoy helping people during such an important time in their lives and reminding them of why they wanted to do this in the first place.”
