I started in electronics and computer engineering, transferred to computer science by October 2021, and finally found my path in financial planning in June 2022. Not everyone has the financial means or family support to attend college out of high school – that was my case. Attending college seemed like a distant dream, but Grantham made it reality. Going back to school was very scary for me. I am 52 and chose to go back to earn a certificate in medical billing and coding. My student advisor was fantastic when I first signed up, very encouraging. Almost all of the teachers were helpful in providing clear feedback helping ensure that I understood all information provided. I thoroughly enjoyed all my classes and loved the additional support available from the writing center. The only suggestion I would make would be to include physical coding books. Online access is great, but does not compare to a physical book.

This is my third degree I have earned from Grantham, but one of the reasons I have returned for my education is because not only one person has been helpful through hard times, but the school culture is set up for real people who have a lot to deal with and simultaneously want to earn a degree. I live in the upstate of South Carolina, and in September of 2024, SC and Western NC were wiped out (no power, internet, for 2 weeks, and gas shortages).I was so thankful that while I was picking up the pieces, I did not have to worry about being kicked out of school. This, among other things, can bring you down, but when you have a great school and support system, it brings resilience.

One moment I’ll never forget happened while I was vacationing in Europe during my Technical Project Management course. I couldn’t access the IEEE resource library to retrieve a required article. I called Summer, and she stayed on the phone with me, troubleshooting in real time. When we couldn’t resolve it, I told her the article I needed—and shortly after, it was in my inbox. That kind of support is rare. Summer made my journey at UA Grantham smoother, more manageable, and far more human. For that, I’m truly thankful.

I am working as an Electrical and Automation Engineer currently, but am going back to get the degree to match my job right now. It has been a struggle to balance the demands of my work between commissioning plants, business trips out of state (and out of country), and being newly married (since November). There were many days I almost broke down from the stress. In the last term, I probably spent a total of 3 of the 8 weeks at home. It was not ideal in the slightest.

Even though I did not join the military before going through this curriculum I have been working a rotating shift at work which included rotating from days to nights every two weeks and 60+ hours a week. The instructors and service desk is very welcoming also they are not limited to specific hours. If you would like to pursue a degree at Grantham but are unsure about the online schooling. Prior to starting Julie Wright's class, I was unsure if I was going to continue because I had never been able to figure out how to write HTML and CSS code to build a website. Starting of week 1 and going into week 2 I had issues with my laptop and issues submitting my assignments. Most of my work in week1 and 2 were deleted. Julie Wright quickly responded and help submit trouble tickets to Grantham helpdesk. If it wasn't for her quick response and persistence I would've dropped the course.

I don't even know where to begin when trying to describe how helpful and impactful James Harris has been on my UAG experience. I was transferred to him upon enrollment into my BS degree, and he has been there for me during every term, every roadblock, and every question I had. Having technical issues can be a pain, especially when it can take up to a week to resolve, or getting proctored exams rescheduled for a multitude of reasons. When these events happened he checked with me often, when he didn't have the answers, he was honest about it, never giving me the run around and got the answers within 24 hours. End of degree coursework is stressful, I have found myself emailing questions he already answered, he doesn't make a big deal about it, just gives the answers again. Kudos. Thanks.

During discussion posts, he asked questions that provoked deeper thought and understanding. Assignment feedback is engaging, even if the paper is well written. I got the worst news I could imagine, I had stage 3 melanoma cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. Right then I wanted to give up, but instead I took the time I had off from work to go to college not only to better myself but so I could make sure my sons would be able to have a good life.
